Get Your Ideas Accepted
Inspired by "Designing Through the Storm"
If you’re sure that the client has missed an important point or made a decision without understanding the potential consequences, you’d be remiss if you didn’t make a calm, diplomatic argument for your point of view. In many (if not most) instances, you’ll be overruled; such is the nature of client services and professional design.
Here are some suggestions for getting your ideas accepted
- Make sure the client knows that you understand thier point and are not just dismissing it out of hand. Acknowledge that their idea has upsides too.
- Make it clear that you are not trying to cut corners. Point out that doing it thier way could actually save you time but you still want to do it your way.
- Have courage in your convictions. If you truly believe in your point then reassure clients by with an enthusiastic strong voice.
- If they still don't accept your point, ask them to send you an email acknowledging that they're not accepting your advice.
Of course nothing can beat having a client who trusts your opinion.
